Blinking during a headturn - My brain has fried!

Hey guys I know there is a way to do this but my brain is just not playing ball - I can't put it together in my head, maybe you can help.
I am doing a switch layer head turn. The eyelid is in its own switch layer which I can get to open and closed interpolated during the head turn. What I am having a hard time figuring out is how to make him blink while turning his head since any switch takes all the way to the keyframe to close/open the eye.
I want him to blink midmotion - i.e. I want to be able to set keyframes for the eyeblink between the keyframes for the head turn. I could set keyframes for the blink seperately but the eyelid would be out of position on the head since the head would already be turning.
Arrrrggghhh! I'm freaking out. Why can't I null this out?
Is there a more intelligent chap here who has already figured this out or am I just asking too much of ASP?
