Best way to set up a 3D space?

(AS 6.2 here.)
I wonder which way is the best to do the following:
Imagine a stack of some 8 or 10 "disks" with equal space between them so they form a cylinder. Each "disk" consists of lots of images, like cards splattered on a glass table.
Now I want to turn that cylinder in space so once you'll see all disks from the top, then you'll see the cylinder from the side, zoom in to some item, and back again etc. All this happens over a background which is immune to camera movement.
One way would be to build all this like that:
- cylinder group folder
- - disk 8, Z=8
- - disk 7, Z=7
- - disk 6, Z=6
- - disk 5, Z=5
- - disk 4, Z=4
- - disk 3, Z=3
- - disk 2, Z=2
- - disk 1, Z=1
- background layer
and just move the camera around all this.
However, the other way wouldn't move the camera at all. Instead I'd grab that cylinder layer (and everything inside it) and turn it around as I like.
Theoretically I should get the same result in both ways. Am I right? And which way do you prefer in terms of easier workflow?
