Impossible to edit a path without seeing shape

When a vector layer is placed within a group layer, it is no longer possible to edit a path without seeing the shape and the colors.
Before, in V6, all I had to do was select a vector layer, and uncheck the eye icon. The shape(s) in the layer would disappear, but the path could still be edited.
This allowed me to edit the path only.
This feature works in V7, but NOT when the vector layer is placed within a group layer.
I believe this is a bug, since in V6 it was possible to do this. Moreover, I don't see why it would behave differently because the vector layer is placed inside a group layer.
