rotating bones around x and y axis?

hi,

i'm trying to put a small sword fight scene together in which you see two characters from the side view (consist of bitmap images put together, fully rigged).
the problem i have is if i make the characters attack it looks like they are just striking up and down with their swords. so i have to find a way to turn at least their forearms slightly to the back or the front to create the effect that they are actually swinging their sword.
i can create this effect roughly by skaling the bones over time but it looks a little weird.
is there a way to rotate the arms in such a way (around x and y axis)?

thanks for your help!

There is no way to rotate bones in 3d.
The only way you can obtain that is rotating an entire layer on X and Y axis, but I recommend you to avoid that process.
Here are some old examples I did with bones, layers and 3d objects (3d objects are optional, anyway).

I recommend you to use scale bone tool and correct the vector points where bones works wrong. It's the easier and more and more controllable way, in my opinion.
