follow path tool and stroke exposure problems...

if anyone can shed some light on how this thing works i'm all ears. The basics are simple enough as stated in the instruction manual, but i can't for the life of me work out how the point of contact to the path is specified, it seems totally unrelated to the layer origin so there must be some hidden secret...
i kept getting objects attaching way offset from the line! Also, related to this, the rotation of the attached object - how do you make sure up is up when attaching to a path?? i tried to use this in a project, i managed to make it work for me on one part but other parts just wouldn work at all...
aside: dunno if this is a bug, but i was trying to make an arrow head follow a path which was being drawn out by the path exposure tool, and i dont think what you see in the editor is EXACTLY what renders - due to the problems above i tried frame by framing the arrow head by hand making sure it's always at the tip of the line but the render showed the line further forward than the arrow, despite the editor looking perfect...??
