Creating detailed backgrounds

Hey ASP forum goers,

This time around I am working on a cartoon that requires a little eye candy in my opinion... and I was wondering if anyone can give a how to draw more detailed backgrounds in ASP itself.

I could bring in other programs to do the job ( I.E. Flash, Photoshop ) but that would require me to really learn the ins and outs of mainly Photoshop...which I just don't have the time and patience to do.

I know ASP is capable of producing some quality backgrounds... can anyone post some samples of their work and explain it?

Thanks Goers!

Well ... as much as I like textures, it's not good to just scram a lot of detail into a BG.

Again it's John Kricfalusi (http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/) where to look at. Have a search about BG composition on his site, he does a lot of explaining about that topic, too much to link here.

Basically your BG has to read immediately in terms of composition and perspective. Then it needs the right amount of contrast, a not-so-detailed area for the characters , and well-chosen colours. The amount of details comes last: only as much as necessary.

Hans Bacher (http://one1more2time3.wordpress.com/) has a lot of BGs on his site, often recreated from pans. These are worth to study as well.

Thanks Slowtiger,

I am looking at those links now. For my cartoon I need to really learn how to make a nice forest scene.

Although I would like to experiment with textures on houses...

Check my background paintings here, i made all these works with only AS:

http://www.coroflot.com/public/individu ... rker.&c=1&

I used the brushes anime studio has to create the textures but i also used some others i downloaded from the internet that are supposed to be for photoshop.
This is basicly what i do:

-Layout
-Base color
-Texture(AS brushes, some times other stuffs)
-shading
-lighting

I dont make a basic sketch of the bg in pencil and paper first, i just start designing the background directly in AS.

I also recommend you to check that blog slowtiger shows, i know it and i can say its useful and great.

Parker - I am messing around with some textures ( brushes ) that ASP gives you. Can I change the color of them? I don't know if I am doing this entirely correctly...

Where can I get royalty free textures?

Its very easy to get free brushes from the web, just use google, write something like "photoshop brushes" or something similar.
Yes you can change its color by pressing right click like if you were going to change the color of the stroke, when the brush settings window is open make sure to check the box "tint brush using stroke color"

Change the color of the stroke by making right click on a color on the swatches or go to the color picker.

So when you put a brush in the actual shape. The fill. Can you color it like you can with the stroke?

I'm looking at some of your art and just wondering how for example your trees have those shades. How to color in the actual texture used on a fill.
