.AVI wont export

I've never had this problem before. . .
I tried to export a .AVI but when I tried, the "preview/export" window came up for a second and then went away without giving me the option to select a codec.
I tried exporting .AVI files of other Anime studio projects that did export earlier and they don't work now.
I tried a different .AVI exporting program and it could export .AVI files
What's wrong?

is a previous render of the same name open on your computer?
This happens when the file you're trying to overwrite is open - it's not AVI specific as it happens to me with MOV export...
...unless it's another problem entirely

I don't have a file of the same name. . .
also when rendering I try to keep all other programs off.

Try this. When the name to save it comes up, type something that is all letters and one word (no spaces, no periods, etc.). Then save.
What sounds like the same problem happened to me. I never figured out exactly what was wrong. But I was doing tutorials, and their names had spaces and periods in them. It would look like it was about to render, then just stop and go back to editor. I changed the name of what I was saving, and it worked every time...

Nothing worked. I did notice something recently though. My AVI's didn't have thumbnails like normal, instead they were showing the Windows media player icon. Then my computer didn't know how to open .AVI files anymore.
Long story short. I used a restore point and everything is good now.
