My target size is 720x480 (iTunes store)/ 640x480 (YouTube).


Should I render the Anime files out as 720x480? And have Final Cut Express create the different sizes?
Or render the animation as 640x480 and have Final Cut Express create one 720x480 file and one 640x480 file.

Render to 720x540, then resize in your video editor as needed. Down-scaling video gives better quality then up-scaling.

I wan't sure if there was any rescaling...it gets confusing with square and rectangular pixels.

I had rendered my animations at 720x480. But FinalCut squishes it. I have to export out of FinalCut as 640x480 in order to have display at the correct ratio.

If you render at 720x480 from AnimeStudio, it will give you a squished 640x480. Which is fine for older tv's and dvd's but not youtube.

Resizing isn't the way to go, you need to actually crop the video. This is how I would do it.

1) Make your animation in AS at 720 x 480 and save as AVI.

2) Import that to VirtualDub.

3) Click on the video tab at the top and click on filters then hit add, scroll down and click on null transform then hit OK then hit cropping on the page that pops up (vary important to do so.)

4) You need to a little math now. The original image is 720 x 480 and you want 640 x 480. So now you have 80 extra lines you want to crop for the width. All you need to do now is take 40 off X1 offset and 40 off the x2 offset and seeing how the height is still 480 you don't need to mess with the y offsets.

5) Hit OK and save the file and enjoy

I tested this a few min ago. I made a circle at 720 x 480 and used the method above and got this video below; ignore the fact that i uploaded in widescreen and it did get squashed but both the 720 and 640 are squashed together.

I'm pretty sure there's an export option for cropping in FinalCut.
If not, I have a couple of PCs that I can use Virtualdub with.
