Make all particles fade away

So I've finally decided to dive into the exciting world of particle layers and created a smoke effect. I know how to make the particles end by fading away, but how do I do that and then make them ALL fade away at the same time? I'm trying to make one character breathe out smoke for a few moments and then just make the remaining smoke fade away completely.

Just set opacity keyframes for the particle layer.

Like, at frame 24, open the layer property, set opacity to 100%, at frame 48 set opacity at 0%

I've tried that, as well as for the group layer and individual layers. It doesn't work for some reason. Does it matter that the individual particle sublayers have different opacity levels?

It should not if you set opacity on top group.

Okay, I think I figured it out. It seems it was indeed fading away, but that fading only shows up on the preview. Otherwise it looks like it just suddenly cuts off. That's slightly bothersome, but eh. :? Thanks for your help. :D

Oh yeah, forgot to say that. Many of the effects only show at render.
