Storm lightning effects on characters and surroundings.
Would you guys do this by switch layers or simply use video editing program in the "post production" phase?
Anybody has any tips on this?

This might help...
Short lightning shot

1- Make a top layer.
2- On that layer draw a white square that covers the entire visible area.
3- In Composting Effects Animated check the Visible on when lightning strikes.
4- Set the Layer Blending Mode to Overlay.
5- Also check the Immune to camera movements.

Old animation film camera tricks

- add one full-screen black frame before the white flash screen - this makes it look brighter.

- lighting effects generally lead up to the 'big bang' - either a distant flash or cloud effect first, to subtly let the audience stormy weather is about.

- using a graduated filter makes a stormy sky look more menacing - a Grey to transparent png built in PhotoShop works well. But put the Flash white screen in front of the grad!.

- Cutting scene in the white flash frame also works well.
