not that I'm going to do this any time soon, but i am wondering how I would go about making silhouettes from my already-created character?

i REALLY don't want to have to by hand outline everything, re-rig, you get the jist...

is it possible?

What do you mean exactly?
Do you mean a strong outline, or an actual suilhouette, a filled-in outline all in black?

For the latter, use layer shadow and ramp it right up to fill the whole character in with black.

could this be done with mask?

Masking would be the right way. Put your top character layer (and everything inside) into a bone or group layer, add a layer with just a big black shape, and set the masking properties of each layer correctly.

Masking. No need to retrace everything. As slowtiger said - a group with your character inside in its own group and a black layer inside the first group. Then, set the first group's masking to HIDE ALL and I'm not sure which, either the black layer or your character's group to MASK THIS LAYER. Also, the layer order, ie either the black layer on top of the character or the character on top of the black layer, also plays a part.

Turn on MASKING in the settings box to see what's working.

For new users, such as I, a file to study can be helpful.
An animation with silhouette effect can be found at...

I did the drawing with several layers... it would have been better to have the drawing all on one layer like PARKER does... I had to 'Add To Mask' for each layer...

I think the effect could be useful for NOIR mood lighting effects.
