Locking and unlocking Bones

I am working on a shot of a character pushing a large door open. I am animating a walk cycle using the lock bone function to help make his feet look like they make contact with the floor.

to make the movement work i am moving the legs to the respective place to that when i turn off the "lock bone" on the foot the legs continue in the correct motion. However i am having a lot of trouble with the legs "popping" ruining any chance of a slick motion. I understand from previous experience that this can happen if the extremes of the movement range are met but it doesnt appear to be at that point.

The popping is happening around 3 quarters of the way through the motion.

I understand it is tough to understand what i mean without seeing the file but can anyone give me any advice on where i might be going wrong?

should i be animating the rough movement first THEN apply the bone lock or the other way round (as i have been to start with)?

You always animate from the bold to the detailed motion.

yes i am aware of that :) keys, breakdowns and finally inbetweens. so are you saying to apply the lock to the bone after it is keyed out?

I don't use that feature at all, instead I set keys at every single frame if necessary.

To fix 'popping' just use the rotate bone tool to correct it on frames that is happening on. You just kind of force it to behave right.
