Transferring Characters

Perhaps this is a very noob thing to ask, but is there any way to take characters form one anime studio file and put them into another?

File/ import anime object. Follow the prompts. Easy.

Does it only work with Pro?

No, according to the product comparison you can import Moho (anime) files, so this ought to work in both versions.
