Is it possible to have dynamic depth of field with a script? Or would it require to be part of an upgrade to the program?

I've never played with dof in AS. Since there is only one place to set it in the project settings and no animation channels for it I don't think you can change it with a script.
However the concept of dof is based on the camera. You could probably change the dof effect by moving/changing the camera. Experimentation would be required.
An easier method is to just use layer blur and animate it. You can "fake" changing dof this way.

I have used the layer dof but it does not give a smooth transition.
It would be nice to be able to change the cameras focal point with out playing games of moving the camera and changing the size of the layers to get the effect of a change of focus.
