There are lots of valid reasons for using illustrator or freehand and importing to AS. Some of my characters end up on shirts, posters etc and need to be scalable to no end, perfect colors, text wrapped and flowed through etc... stuff AS just doesnt do well. So while i get the results I want from those applications, I have to adjust things when I bring them into AS for additional work. Thats the nature of the beast.
AS wasnt built for print and I think the developers made all those nifty import tools for just that (among other) reasons.
You develop your own workflow based on what you need to do with your art and what your budget can handle. For me thats illustrator and AS together and it works well. Its not perfect but it gets me what I need on a number of levels.
