Most challenging, as I wrote, were the transitions from one scene to another.
As for textures: what you see is nearly exclusively done in Photoshop. While still experimenting with the look of it all, I used the same texture in AS (multiply, using the PNGs with alpha as masks), but once the design was fixed I reworked all assets in PS and added texture, increased contrast, and made everything darker, since that texture mask in AS increased rendering times significantly. If you save the new versions under the same old name you don't need to replace anything in AS as it will update automatically.
I used about 300 different bitmaps for this, some as wide as 10.000 px and 8.000 px high.
