Just Curious, how many Animation Studios are using Moho

Post by ericbdg »

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious about why some Animation Studios are not picking up on Moho, and tend to stay with other animation software.
In my opinion, compared to Harmony, Moho is much more economical and packs a lot of punch. I get it, for big studios, they tend to have the budget for Harmony, but small to medium animation studios? I keep seeing they are using Adobe Flash or going classic frame-by-frame.

Was it because it was more of a hassle to changing the entire production pipeline?

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers,

Erick S.

I used Moho at Dreamworks Animation for TV production from 2015 to 2024. I could give you a list of the shows we used it on, but it's a VERY long list. Of the shows I personally used Moho on are:
  • The Adventures of Puss In Boots
  • Dawn Of The Croods
  • All Hail King Julien
  • Curses
  • Fright Krewe
  • The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants
  • Kung Fu Panda: Paws Of Destiny
  • Archibald's Next Big Thing
  • Harvey Street Kids
  • Trolls: The Beat Goes On
  • Trolls: Trollstopia
  • Boss Baby: Back In Business
  • Jurrasic World: Camp Cretaceous
  • Abominable and the Invisible City
  • Fast And Furious Spy Racers
There may be others but this is what I can remember right now. I'll append the above list if I think of any shows I missed.

You can see examples of Moho animations on my two DWA demo reels here: My Demo Reels. I have a third reel coming out later this summer.

I know Moho was used in other DWA shows by other animators. The second Croods and second Boss Baby shows come to mind.

And, of course, Cartoon Saloon has been using it for TV and feature film animation for at least as long as DWA TV has.

A few years ago, an animator at Rough Draft said they occasionally used it for background animations and small elements for Futurama. I imagine other big studios have small units that use Moho at least occasionally.

I'm not sure which other big studios use Moho, but many smaller independent studios do.

Oh, yeah, and it was recently reported that Moho was used for parts of the highly regarded Scavengers Reign. (Yay! it's one of my all-time favorite shows!) Lost Marble posted a reel featuring SR footage a month or so ago.

I have a small studio, and I use Moho for my main animation software. I produce animation tales to publish work on YouTube. Let not call it a studio, because I work mostly alone, it can be called a YouTube channel, with small studio for sound recording, and produce animation. :D

Ah I see, ok2, so Moho is popular, but mostly focused on small units of a large studio or some independent studio, ok, this is an excellent insight.

Thank you :)

Interesting! Mind sharing the youtube link? Any success in monetizing the content?

It is not much success since the RPM in my country is low, however I love the job as an author and animator. If you are curious about my work, you can visit my YouTube channel Khmer Narrated Stories. ❤️ I do use other softwares along side with Moho to create animation, but when it comes to animation, what I use first is Moho. ❤️

At every big studio I've worked at, I've been part of a unit that uses whatever tool works best for the task at hand. So, I may use Moho one day, Harmony the next, and Adobe Animate the day after that. Sometimes, I may use all three, plus After Effects, Nuke, and Maya, LightWave and Blender, all on the same shot. This craziness happens to me more often than you might think. :D

That said, Moho remains my favorite way to animate 2D puppets.

All on the same shot? Was it something like Gumball series? I can't imagine how difficult it is to manage each shot using multi techniques specific for each character...

Oh man, please please please provide a voice translation to Indonesian/Vietnamese/Thai. Folk horror stories are always a good sell there.
There are millions of potential viewers there! Just use an ai auto translate or something and reupload with the translated title etc. No need to reedit, just publish same video with new voice over.

Thank you. In my old videos, there are English subtitle. I wish I can do more about the video translation too in the future.

 This is related to the thinking habits of users. Some people are accustomed to and willing to accept the work logic of frame by frame painting, so they prefer animation software like tbh and an that mainly work frame by frame. Moho is more like a 3D software, it requires a complete model, based on which keyframes are created to form animations. So traditional 2D studios rarely use Moho, while young people, independent workers, and those who have not received 2D animation training tend to prefer Moho. They were inspired by their initial intuition for animation, rather than being taught that boundaries exist in three or two dimensions.
