There's books about that, I recommend to check your library.

here is my first contribution to this forum.
BiteyCastle Academy 2dFX Animation Course which is an extensive course, by Adam Phillips, on how to animate (hand drawn) all sorts of effects. The course can be downloaded for free.

The course is comprised of 53 lessons. Fire is covered in the course, like in the 'Torch Flame' lesson. As for lava specifically, it's mentioned in the 'Viscosity' lesson. And maybe with a bit of the 'Boiling', 'Foaming' and 'Pooling' lessons it could be a start.
