There are a few modern alternatives, like HEIF and APNG, that look significantly better than GIF. Unfortunately, I don't think they've caught on yet with the general public.

I just never expect any GIF to look very good. It's an archaic 'video' format that somehow refuses to die. But not bad for 1987 I guess and, for many users, the inherent poor quality is part of its appeal.

You're going to need to use dithering to make up for the lack of colors in simulating gradients, like textures and shadows.
