Invisible hand drawing line effect?

Hi. I believe this effect has been discussed somewhere in these forums before........but cant find it. I'm talking about the effect where you view a clip where it appears a single line (I've also seen multiple lines) is being drawn on the canvas by an invisible hand.........as though the artist is in the process of drawing an outline of the scene as we watch. I can't remember how this is done. I was wondering about the "layer trails" script however I've never used this script and not sure about how it works. Was also wondering about using some form of masking or switch layers. Anyways....is anyone familiar with this effect and what the best method is to achieve it? Thanks.
