weird bone behavior with flipped character

I have never had this problem before so maybe there is a setting I changed on accident.

So I import an already made character. When he is facing left, the bones are controlled normally, ie; dragging the bone to the left will move the arm to the left. However, if I flip the character's layer so he is facing right, the bone controls become reversed, ie; dragging the bone left will move the arm to the right. So it's extremely difficult to animate this way. Does anyone know what happened?

Haven't come across this problem, but assuming it's smart bones you're talking about, my*guess* would be that movements are absolute, not relative. Do some simple tests with rigs to see if this is the case?
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?
