Animated shape order on same layer

Does anyone know if it is possible to animate the shape order on the same layer?
Example, I want a circle to appear in front of a line at certain times but want to
keep the shapes all on one layer.

I don't know if there's a propper channel for that. I was trying to do such a thing in the past, but it didn't work.
