okay, once i get my image traced over and the bones laid out, i try to put it back together and my layers just stretch out. i try to realign the layers, and the bones are messed up. getting really frustrated :evil:

Did you do the tutorials about bones and binding? Do them first. Start with simple stuff. Only when you know how binding works you should try acomplete character.

Additionally it would help if you post a screenshot of your work: how it should look like,m and how it looks "stretched".

i did the tutorial on creating characters, but that was it. i am totally lost

You will need to upload the image to a host.

okay, i figured out what i was doing wrong. aside from not binding layers to bones, i also wasnt adjusting the bone strength to just cover that bone, so i had a mess. here is a quicky i did just to make sure i had the rigging right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nghKSeCzlBM
