I should probably specify that I'm on a Mac. It has always been CTRL-Drag to zoom, and CTRL-Shift-Drag to pan. The latter still works, but zoom is kaput, it seems.

When I was confronted with this problem, I made a "stunt" arm switch layer with an arm in the up position and one in the down position, as seen here. It was the easiest way to do lots of strumming for me, but might not be as sophisticated a solution as you're looking for.

I can only guess that this is the result of a ram issue, perhaps? Have you tried setting the dimensions that you want in the file, closing it, and using batch export? Might be worth a shot.
